In the second half of the 19th century, renowned artists such as Moritz von Schwind and Otto Speckter created the popular Munich picture sheets, including illustrations of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. The fairy tales are told in a heavily modified and abridged form on just one sheet at a time: for example, in a large picture with little or no text and integrated individual scenes that require more than just a glance, or in several comic-like picture scenes and strips with lines of text and verses underneath.
The exhibition presents a selection of 25 fairy tale illustrated sheets in the original and in enlargements, whose Fraktur script has been translated into easy-to-read texts. Details can be discovered through an exhibition quiz, while a reading corner and a play corner with board and quartet games centred on fairy tales invite visitors to linger, play and even dress up.
A fairytale exhibition for the whole family!
