The anniversary exhibition "Sammeln!" focuses on the private collecting activities of the sculptor Lothar Fischer (1933-2004) and his wife Christel Fischer (*1934). Today, most of their private collection is housed in the publicly accessible museum, which has been run by the Lothar & Christel Fischer Foundation in cooperation with the strong city of Neumarkt i.d.OPf. since 2004.
The reasons for collecting art are many and varied: for some, art is a financial investment, for others it is pure passion. Sometimes a specific concept is followed, sometimes a line is pursued very intuitively. In most cases, the private collection is a reflection of the collector's personality. For Lothar Fischer, collecting was a desire to look, to discover, to experience, but also to engage in lively dialogue with colleagues. In addition to his own artistic activities, he was primarily interested in works by artist friends, but also in artefacts from other cultures. Works were rarely purchased on the art market. Most pieces came to him as gifts or in exchange. Over many decades, the couple thus succeeded in amassing a manageable collection of figurative art from the 1960s to the 2000s as well as non-European objects. Drawings have always been a particular focus. Lothar Fischer never consciously saw himself as a collector.
