Around the castle

Castles fascinate young and old alike. In our imagination, they were home to daring knights and charming damsels. But what was everyday life really like in the castles of Lower Franconia? Were they venues for knightly tournaments and festive banquets? Or was everyday life in the castles quite different?
Visible from afar, Karlsburg Castle sits enthroned on a rocky outcrop above the Main River. Based on the travelling exhibition "Rund um die Burg" (Around the Castle) organised by the district of Lower Franconia, the Karlstadt Historical Society is focusing on the legendary Karlsburg Castle near Karlstadt am Main and supplementing the exhibition with its own exhibits. What did the original castle look like? How was it furnished and how did people live in it? When can we assume the once grand complex was built and when did it come to an end? The exhibition answers these and many other questions and presents a detailed model of a castle from the High Middle Ages, found objects and original column remains from the castle grounds. Anyone interested in exploring Karlsburg Castle and other Lower Franconian castles with all their senses and immersing themselves in the world of towers, gates and defensive walls is cordially invited. Themed islands focus on different topics, including the kitchen and the supply of food to the castle's inhabitants, living conditions, legends, stories and coats of arms. Visitors of all ages can look forward to walk-in activity rooms with numerous interactive stations around the castle, including a medieval writing workshop, a stove tile puzzle and a reading station.
