For six decades, the Friedberg-based artist and architect Thomas Weil (b. 1944) has been deeply engaged with ornamentation in architecture, art and design, continually developing it further: for residential buildings, monumental façades and art in architecture, as well as in the design of interiors and furniture, and collections of carpets, fabrics and tiles. Ornamentation is also the subject of his paintings, graphic works and publications.
The exhibition provides an overview of Weil’s diverse body of work. In an impressive installation by the Augsburg-based media art laboratory, LAB BINÆR, his artworks are projected in animated form for the first time and displayed in seemingly endless repetition. Through this virtually dynamic visual presentation, his work takes on a new dimension.
Weil’s artistic approach consists, on the one hand, of the study of the theory of historical ornamentation and, on the other, of the reception of Persian architecture and the abstract-constructivist art of the 1950s. As early as the 1970s and 1980s, he realised his ideas in the design of the outdoor facilities at the Olympic Village in Munich and in the interior architecture of the Ismaili Centre in London.
