Leipzig sculptor Matthias Garff, born in 1986, is presenting a long-term art project in the foyer of the museum: seven sculptures of native and exotic songbirds - bee-eater, great tit, hummingbird, yellowhammer, blackbird, jay and green woodpecker. These "aerial birds" are mainly composed of found objects and everyday items from the affluent and throwaway society. Each sculpture is characterised by its own attitude, colour and materiality.

Garff, who studied at the Dresden University of Fine Arts, scrutinises the way people view nature in an urban environment in his works. In the city, we rarely encounter nature in its free form, but as a space cultivated by man - especially in close interaction with urban architecture. This fragile ecosystem is in a constant state of change. The loss of biodiversity is also noticeable in Würzburg: development is displacing fallow land and precious open spaces and retreats are disappearing. The aerial birds symbolise a nature that demands space - and asserts itself in its diversity.

The Museum im Kulturspeicher is delighted to provide space for these special birds. To give the "antenna birds" a permanent home in the foyer of the museum, the MiK is calling for sponsorships for the sculptures. Information on purchasing options is available on request (verwaltung.kulturspeicher@stadt.wuerzburg.de).
