For 500 years now, he has stood watch over Traunstein’s town square, and what stories he could tell us about the events that have taken place here, were he not made of stone – the ‘marble man on the fountain’, whom the locals christened ‘Liendl’ in the 19th century. In 1526, the ornate fountain figure – Traunstein’s oldest landmark – was created by the outstanding Landshut sculptor Stephan Rottaler on commission from the town council.
The 500th anniversary of the life-size sculpture in its magnificent Milanese armour provides a welcome opportunity for the Heimathaus Traunstein City Museum to explore, in a special exhibition, not only the Lindl Fountain but also the town’s other fountains – some of which have disappeared and others which still exist.
Visitors are invited to peer into the deep abyss of the Romanesque deep well through numerous objects, images, information panels, infographics, as well as video and audio, to discover just how much marble was used in the Lindl Fountain and why we can now identify its artist with certainty. You will learn why the magnificent Truna Fountain disappeared, where the Fish and Florian Fountains were located, which fountain features a ‘beer hydrant’, and much, much more.
