In the flow of time
A journey through the (experience) spaces of history

For the art project "In the Flow of Time" in the basement of the cultural centre, artist Jurij Diez stages a tour through several rooms installed with the support of set designer Alois Elmauer: he works partly with the existing, partly with new walls, plays with light, darkness and the combination of historical artefacts, furniture elements and windows to look back and through. Visitors enter the installation via a revolving door and are initially confronted with their own reflection. However, the nested mirror box shows the image of one's own face from the perspective of others and thus raises the crucial question: Who am I in the eyes of others? How is my identity defined?
Walking through the room-boxes with historical stations before and after the expulsion of the Danube Swabians becomes a journey through history and at the same time an almost physical confrontation with the question of identity and homeland. It is not only images, video projections and sound fragments that enable a sensual experience; by moving around in the space himself, the artist succeeds in evoking contrasting emotions such as confinement, homeliness, being locked in, standing still or being in motion.
The roots of the artist - who also works as an actor - in the theatre become clear here: each room is like its own stage play, a room within a room that allows us to experience the flow of time individually.
Jurij Diez (born 1981) was born in Kazakhstan into a family of Russian-Germans and came to Germany as a late repatriate in 2002. The themes of flight, expulsion and new beginnings have accompanied him throughout his life. The walk-in installation is the result of a collaboration with the Bavarian Cultural Centre of Germans from Russia (BKRD).
