The Museum Georg Schäfer (Museum Georg Schäfer) and the Kunst Museum Winterthur, which houses the Oskar Reinhart Foundation, both have rich holdings on Romanticism. These core holdings are now being joined by many loans. This will enable both museums to present an exhibition on Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), who was primarily active in Dresden.

At the centre of the exhibition is the question of the historical origins of the atmospheric landscape, the harbingers of Romanticism, which has hardly been considered to date. By juxtaposing Caspar David Friedrich's works with these "solemn landscapes", as Christian Cay Lorenz Hirschfeld called them, it will become clear to what extent these predecessors could be seen as mediators from the perspective of the generation around 1800. Their groundbreaking achievements lie in the wide range between real and idealised depictions of nature and the skilful placement of atmospheric triggers. The relationship between nature and man did not only take place on the level of knowledge and understanding, it also appealed to the senses.
