Gotthard Bonell is a painter with an authentic passion and an immense creative drive. Time and again, he explores the diverse possibilities of painterly expression, moving with playful ease along the fine line between figuration and abstraction. His painting and drawing techniques bear witness to old-masterly expertise, but are also open to artistic experimentation. With his unmistakable signature style, Bonell creates a world that deals with fundamental questions of art and human existence in an intimate and emotionally moving, but also enigmatic and disturbing way.
The starting point for the new works is the natural landscape, in particular massive mountain formations, as well as diverse body shapes and found objects. Mountains appear in shimmering, atmospheric light moods and the immediate experience of nature is palpable, even if the views often do not offer expansive, romantic panoramas. Zoomed in close to us, the rocks become an abstracted painterly gesture. The artist delights in the inexhaustible variety of colours and shapes of nature, a suitable backdrop for his virtuoso play with light and shadow, layers and structures. He sometimes works like a sculptor, creating pasty, relief-like surfaces. Mostly, however, he blurs landscapes with still lifes of body forms.
