Literature & Attitude

“Literature & Attitude” sheds light on the extraordinary role played by the journalist and literary scholar Rachel Salamander, who founded the Literaturhandlung in 1982. The Literaturhandlung on Munich’s Fürstenstraße was the first specialist bookshop for literature on Judaism in Germany after 1945. It offered many people an intellectual and emotional home.
The exhibition showcases Rachel Salamander’s literary and political world, which extended far beyond Munich. Her guests included writers such as Louis Begley, Maxim Biller, Lily Brett, David Grossman, Batya Gur, Barbara Honigmann, Ruth Klüger, Amos Oz, Robert Schindel, Zeruya Shalev, Gerty Spies and Grete Weil.
At the heart of the exhibition is the Salamander Archive, a collection of Jewish literature and contemporary history that has grown over four decades: original audio recordings, photographs, documents, guest books and TV features bring debates dating back to the 1980s to life.
The artist Miriam Salamander accompanies the exhibition with a site-specific installation made of paper and wire, which explores questions of visibility, legibility and layering within the space.
