Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s work is a passionate invitation to see the world through different eyes and to experience it anew through the senses. In his visual compositions, all elements are given equal status; they coexist without linear perspective, thereby overturning traditional hierarchies.

Hundertwasser offers a different view of the world: buildings are transformed into organic structures, trees become luminous masses of colour, and people become part of an ornamental landscape. In his visions, human creations follow nature’s lead and blend into it as if they had grown there – without straight lines or right angles. Familiar visual conventions are magically suspended.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser set new standards for printmaking and introduced many innovations. His screen prints are composed of over 20 layers of colour using experimental techniques; amongst other things, he worked with foil embossing and glass dust coatings to individualise the print runs and thus produce unique pieces in series.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser Regentag Dunkelbunt, born Friedrich Stowasser (1928–2000), was an Austrian artist who became known not only as a painter but also as an architect and environmentalist. His style, which rejected straight lines, and the integration of nature into his architectural designs became his hallmarks. Hundertwasser lived and worked in Vienna (AUT), Venice (ITA) and Kawanaka (NZL).
