At first glance, we are misled. What initially looks like a window fogged up with condensation, with a few drops running down it and revealing a tiny glimpse of the landscape in their wake, is neither a window nor a photograph of a window, but an oil painting.
It is a picture that looks like something else – so perfectly executed that, as a viewer, one can hardly believe the image is actually a painting. The technical term for this is trompe-l’œil painting (French for ‘deceiving the eye’) and Jochen Mühlenbrink is a master of this style of painting.
His exhibition ‘Doch’ in the parcel hall of the MEWO Kunsthalle begins with the materials that were found there back when the building was still the post office. In one corner stand a few parcels; elsewhere, someone has stuck parcel tape onto a picture. But wait – these aren’t parcels at all, and that isn’t parcel tape either. It’s all painted. The oil paint imitates the parcel tape; the oil paint imitates the paper, transforming a mundane everyday object into a work of art.
