Tove Jansson: The World of the Moomins
18.12.2025 - 12.04.2026 ,
Literaturhaus München (House of Literature Munich)
80 years ago, Finnish artist Tove Jansson invented the Moomins, the iconic chubby trolls that are currently being celebrated around the world. Her stories are a plea for tolerance, empathy and a thirst for adventure. The Literaturhaus München is presenting them for the first time in a major exhibition.
In Moomin Valley, security, friendship and humour reign, but also a pinch of anarchy and rebellion, as well as the satirical wit to which Tove Jansson owed her success as a political cartoonist in the 1930s and 1940s.
This mixture, far removed from any pretence of idyll, yet full of poetry and stubbornness, enchants adults and children alike: It appeals to the inner child in adults, delights nostalgics who grew up with the Moomins and inspires children's imaginations, which do not want to be intellectually underchallenged. The dark and the light, the catastrophic and the comic appear here in a balance that is not bound to any zeitgeist, but is particularly suited to our era.
In the exhibition, Moomin, Schnüferl, Schnupferich, Little Mü and many other characters can be experienced with their stories full of secrets, surprises and adventures. Original illustrations, animations and interactive stations invite you to discover the world of the Moomins.
EXHIBITION BREAK FROM 2.2. TO 27.2.2026
