In 1913, Else Lasker-Schüler wrote to her friend Marianne von Werefkin:
“Most esteemed Princess, noble wild boy, sweet painter,
when may I come — I dream of the sweetness of your paintings.
(The Prince of Thebes) Else Lasker-Schüler (Friend of the Blue Rider rider)”
Else Lasker-Schüler enjoyed playing with gender roles and identities; she also referred to herself as the Prince of Thebes. Her coining of the term ‘Blue Rider rider’ for the female artists of the Blue Rider serves as the leitmotif for this exhibition project. For the first time, we are devoting a comprehensive exhibition to the female artists associated with the Blue Rider, highlighting their significant contribution to the avant-garde of the early 20th century. They were cosmopolitans, patrons and pioneers of a new kind of art. They dared to transcend national, social and artistic boundaries. Their lives were characterised by self-assertion, emancipation and artistic innovation.
