Magnus Elias Rosengarten is curating a series of personal artist talks in cooperation with the Lenbachhaus. In the studios, a profound exchange about existential questions involving belonging, identity and migration will take place in dialogue. The series of talks Voices Unbound: Artists in Conversation provides emotional access to the artists' working process and opens up an exchange for the audience that goes beyond traditional interview situations. . The common denominator of the participants is the focus on the human body as a medium and reference.
Throughout the series, artists from France, Guadeloupe and the United Kingdom who work across disciplines (performance, film/video, drawing and painting) and are primarily active within the global African diaspora will be interviewed: Jimmy Robert (Germany/France/Guadeloupe), Julien Creuzet (France/Martinique) and SERAFINE1369 (UK).
While the conversations with Jimmy Robert and Julien Creuzet will be shown in videos on the Lenbachhaus YouTube channel, the first conversation with SERAFINE1369 will take place at the Lenbachhaus.
People involved
Magnus Elias Rosengarten is an author and curator focussing on the complex relationships between body and space in contemporary art. Central questions of his work are: Which spaces make some bodies a political subject and others not? Who has the power to define bodies and what realities are created in this sense? Rosengarten's work is informed by the rich knowledge archives and systems of the global African diaspora. Non-Western epistemologies are pillars and toolboxes for his work, especially when it comes to the urgent task of visualising bodies and narratives that are constantly moving in the diaspora.
SERAFINE1369 describes dance and movement as an oracular practice and works to bring awareness to the artificially divided space between performer and audience. The artist's work is characterised by an interest in the invisible systems and structures that guide bodies in life. Sculptures, music, videos, narratives and trance states are often used to create an intense atmosphere.
In his practice, Jimmy Robert places the body - often his own - in relation to objects made of paper or other materials, creating an interface between performance and art history. The artist playfully transcends genres by superimposing two- and three-dimensional structures that permeate a wide variety of media, transforming the principle of collage and decollage into a contemporary visual language of forms.
Julien Creuzet's interdisciplinary approach encompasses sculpture, poetry, music, video and animation and scrutinises the multi-layered and complex French colonial history. In addition to his sculptural works, the artist also utilises performative aspects and music/vocals, often culminating in complex montages or environments.
Opening event: Thu, 8 May 2025, 6 pm at the Lenbachhaus.
