The exhibition is dedicated to the aesthetic dimension of material. It invites us to understand material as a space for thought and experience: How does our perception change when art in the interplay of form, space and physical presence is no longer narrated, but experienced, felt and thought? Between rigour and seriality, chance and instability, a field of tension emerges that shows how differently artists have redefined the concept of material and form up until the 1980s.

On display are works by internationally renowned artists such as Phyllida Barlow, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Riki Mijling, Richard Serra, Hanne Darboven, Robert Morris, Charlotte Posenenske, Fred Sandback, Carl Andre, Dadamaino, Gary Kuehn, Nasseren Mohamedi, Barry Le Va, Agnes Martin, Franz Erhardt Walther, Imi Knoebel, Donald Judd, Eduardo Chillida - and Alf Lechner.
