HISTORY OF MARTIAL ARTS
The SC Bavaria 20 Landshut boxing club and its partners: illustrator Michael Lange and photographer Christine Vinçon

LANDSHUTmuseum (Landshut City Museum)
From 24 May, everything on the ground floor of the LANDSHUTmuseum will revolve around boxing. Why? The SC Bavaria 20 Landshut boxing club is one of the oldest boxing clubs in Germany: it was founded on 23 May 1920. Michael Lange, an artist from Landshut, has been a member there since 1988. He soon began taking paper and pencil to training sessions. Since the late 1990s, photographer Christine Vinçon has been capturing boxing matches with her camera. This exhibition showcases the results of the two artists’ long-standing artistic engagement with the sport of boxing. And it goes even further: in nine video interviews, the artists Lange and Vinçon, as well as members of the SC Bavaria 20 Landshut boxing club – active and former boxers, training participants, a coach and the president – provide answers to the following questions:
What fascinates artists such as Lange and Vinçon about this sport? Why is boxing considered one of the most demanding sports? Why does boxing have to contend with so many negative prejudices from the general public? And to what extent has the SC Bavaria 20 boxing club been successfully carrying out social and integrative work for years?
