Georg Karl Pfahler

In October 2026, the artist and former professor at the Nuremberg Academy, Georg Karl Pfahler, would have turned 100. To mark this occasion, the Kunstvilla is presenting an exhibition entitled ‘Georg Karl Pfahler – Colour is Form and Space’, featuring works from his ‘Espan’ and ‘Fra Firenze’ series, through which he gained international recognition and secured a firm place in German post-war art history. Through his work, Pfahler became the most significant German representative of so-called ‘Hard Edge’ painting, a style characterised by clear contours and an emphasised two-dimensionality. Characteristic of Pfahler’s work are the rounded corners of the colour fields and the optical sense of space created by the works.
As part of a cabinet exhibition, three large-format works from the City of Nuremberg’s collection are on display; these are normally on permanent loan to the Neues Museum – State Museum of Art and Design, Nuremberg.
