To lose one’s head, to have a mind of one’s own, to hold one’s head high, to know something by heart – there are countless idioms centred on the human head. In art history, the head is associated with the portrait. Where the need for likeness and the associated representation ends, the question of identity begins. In an age of countless selfies, a description of reality hardly seems meaningful anymore. Moreover, in the present day, only plural identities seem possible. It is therefore not surprising that in the modern era, many artists are interested in the theme of the head: as a starting point for exploring form, for an existential quest, or to raise questions about ideals of beauty and gender.
A major special exhibition at the Kunstvilla showcases how Nuremberg artists such as Franz Vornberger, Werner Knaupp, Christoph Gerling, Christine Colditz, Sejin Kim and others interpret the motif of the head.
