The former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is world-famous thanks to its close family ties to many noble houses. The double duchy, with parts of its territory in Franconia and Thuringia, was established 200 years ago in November 1826. Duke Ernst I suddenly found himself with two residences: Friedenstein Palace in Gotha and Ehrenburg Palace in Coburg, each with its own collections, libraries and archives, and later its own theatre – the two cities being around 80 kilometres apart and separated by the Thuringian Forest. The exhibitions in Coburg and Gotha paint a multifaceted picture of this unusual duchy, which was shaped not least by an increasingly self-confident bourgeoisie.
