"Eduard Bargheer - Structure and Light"
16.02.2025 - 18.05.2025 ,
Kunstmuseum Bayreuth (Bayreuth Art Museum)
The exhibition shows the painter and graphic artist Eduard Bargheer's (1901 - 1979) view of the world and the major role played by his perception of natural light and its colourfulness. He led a life between the island of Finkenwerder near Hamburg and the island of Ischia in the south, opposite Mount Vesuvius.
The observation that light changes with the weather and the seasons fascinated Bargheer even as a child. They taught him that every weather mood has its own light and colour spectrum. He perceived that the colours of early spring had to be roughly horizontal. He translated these perceptions into his paintings.
His work cannot be clearly categorised by art dealers. It hovers between Expressionism, Impressionism and Abstraction. His artworks were considered degenerate under National Socialism.
This exhibition presents graphic works from the various phases of his career and thus offers a multifaceted insight into his oeuvre.
