How can living spaces be designed to be liveable and at the same time create aesthetic spaces?
We often encounter sculptures, installations or murals as art in public spaces. These artistic impulses become part of everyday life, they redesign spaces, can create identity and occupy empty spaces that exist both consciously and unconsciously. Sculptures and façade paintings help with orientation in the city or serve as central meeting points. As art in architecture, they have been created for a specific purpose, a particular building or a construction project. The works are an integral part of the building and can be integrated into both the exterior and interior. In the post-war period, works by contemporary artists were created on housing estates and new school buildings in Bayreuth, some of which can still be seen today.
A large mosaic for the vocational school from the 1950s marks the beginning of this series of art on buildings in Bayreuth. It was designed by the graphic artist Caspar Walter Rauh. As with the vast majority of artworks in public spaces, ideas and planning sketches were recorded on paper and cardboard in advance for these works, which are the subject of the exhibition, or models were created.
In this exhibition, it is thus possible to trace the artistic development processes, from the initial idea to the work realised in public space. Originals by C. W. Rauh, Friedrich Böhme, the brothers Anton and Alfred Russ, Günter Rossow, Hans Rucker, Norbert Kricke, Karl Bedal, Werner Froemel and Martin Wöhrl are presented.
The exhibition at the art museum is sponsored by the Oberfrankenstiftung and supported by institutional and private lenders.
The exhibition is accompanied by a current publication on art in public space.
Various themed tours and guided tours of the exhibition allow visitors to rediscover art in public spaces in the city of Bayreuth.

Please note: This exhibition takes place in the exhibition hall of the New Town Hall and not directly in the art museum!
