Gabi Blum - Room without walls
29.06.2025 - 26.10.2025 ,
Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren (Art house Kaufbeuren)
Gabi Blum's site-specific works are understood as processual, experimental arrangements. She combines walk-in installations with performance, painting and video. Seemingly familiar contexts are shifted and varied until new constellations emerge from the chaos or repetition. Making of, construction and deconstruction take place in public or are incorporated into the work as documentation - and it is not unusual for visitors to become protagonists themselves.
In the hall of the Kunsthaus, an expansive installation is created, sometimes live in front of an audience, which appears to be in a constant state of flux. The centre is a kitchen-like space that symbolises the central place of every dwelling for communal eating, talking and exchange.
The installation is equipped with various functions and at the same time appears dysfunctional or fragmented. Walls are not firmly anchored and seemingly solid elements are light and movable. Following on from the idea of the Heimatstube, a surrealistic setting between diorama, playing field and film set is presented. A backdrop that invites you to linger, a place of refuge, a protected space. But who is protecting themselves from what or from whom?
Once you are inside, you are welcome to stay longer, sometimes there is cake, soup or people to talk to, sometimes there is nothing. The scene seems deserted and at the same time in anticipation of the next change.
On three dates, Gabi Blum invites artistic guests and the public to sit in on her installation with performances, video screenings and discussions. The installation will change each time, it will be rebuilt, dismantled and extended.
