Conrad Westpfahl and Sigrid Kopfermann: Dynamics and Colour
27.03.2026 - 19.07.2026 ,
Kunsthalle Schweinfurt (Schweinfurt Art Gallery)
On the 50th anniversary of the death of Conrad Westpfahl (1891–1976) and in memory of the painter Sigrid Kopfermann (1923–2011), the works of these two influential voices in post-war German art are presented in a dialogue-like juxtaposition. The exhibition consistently continues the museum's programmatic focus on informal art and at the same time brings together two positions that sought an independent abstract visual language in different ways. Both artists are exemplary representatives of the generation that developed new forms of artistic expression after 1945 in response to the historical ruptures, experiences and intellectual upheavals of the 20th century.
Conrad Westpfahl, born in Berlin, spent the last years of his life in Wetzhausen near Schweinfurt. After the Second World War, Westpfahl developed the monumental compositions for which he is known today. A central part of his oeuvre is now part of the municipal collection and is regularly presented in changing exhibitions.
Sigrid Kopfermann, born in Berlin and a generation younger, is also one of the important representatives of German Informel. In the 1950s, she developed a free, abstract style of painting in which colour became the central vehicle for experience and sensation, drawing on observations of nature, impressions of landscapes and sensory perception.
