Castling. Robert Weissenbacher and Götz Sambale
07.07.2023 - 15.10.2023 ,
Kunsthalle Schweinfurt (Schweinfurt Art Gallery)
Sculptor Götz Sambale and painter Robert Weissenbacher are two artists who have deliberately chosen the title "Castling" for their presentation. This term, borrowed from the game of chess and originally from Persian, describes a tactic that enables the player to make a skilful move with great effect in the interaction between rook and king - namely to bring the king to a safe position. At the same time, the player gains an advantage and also a little time to optimise his chances of winning.
This exhibition is also a space of tension between two artistic positions that could not be more different. Their works are dialectically characterised by calm and energy, surface and drawing, density and transparency, proximity and distance, colour intensity and colour reduction, possibly triggering different emotional moods in the viewer.
Ultimately, this playing field in the interaction between the two Schweinfurt-born artists, who have long since made a name for themselves in the German art scene following their classical training in Alften (Sambale) and Munich (Weissenbacher), is an exploration of the existential questions of artistic positioning in the self and in society, which could culminate in the question: Am I king or tower today?
