Lovis Corinth - Picture rush
24.10.2025 - 26.01.2026 ,
Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie (Art Forum East German Gallery)
Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) is one of the most important German painters and graphic artists of the first half of the 20th century. He became an early role model for his contemporaries and also influenced subsequent generations of artists. The Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie (Art Forum East German Gallery) houses a collection of twelve paintings from all of the artist's creative phases that is exceptional in the German museum landscape. In addition, there are hundreds of drawings and prints in the museum's graphic art collection. At the heart of the collection are twelve sketchbooks and an album with glued-in sketches, which have now been fully catalogued for the first time.
The exhibition "Lovis Corinth - Bildrausch", on display from 24 October 2025, provides insights into his artistic creative process on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Corinth's death. Which motifs interested the artist and which of them did he develop into a painting? How did he develop his pictorial compositions? These are the main questions that the presentation explores. The scientific analysis of the sketchbooks provides numerous new insights into Corinth's artistic thinking and vision. A juxtaposition of sketches, preparatory compositional studies and actually executed paintings illustrates the path from the idea to the final work. It also shows that Corinth pursued and repeatedly reformulated individual themes throughout his life. The exhibition is based on works from the KOG's own collection and is supplemented by loans from other museums and private collections.
