Axel F. Otterbach – Intersection

As a stone sculptor, Axel F. Otterbach senses the internal structure of sedimentary layers, transforming their inherent energy primarily into geometric forms. He polishes some surfaces so thinly that the stone appears to dissolve in translucent light. The interplay of materiality, light and shadow, as well as of mass and openings, heaviness and lightness, defines the aesthetic of his works.
Openness and experimentation define the artist’s working method: variations in form are explored using various materials such as iron, bronze, wood and MDF boards; the textures of different stones, gold leaf and corroded iron filings convey the appeal of the materials; pyrography, working drawings and photographs test new effects in two dimensions.
