Guest at the Künstlerhaus: Hans Friedrich - artistic works from six decades : Last chance

Hans Friedrich was born in Nuremberg in 1939, the son of a farmer's daughter from the Allgäu. His father was killed in the war. After two flats were destroyed by bombs and the family was left with nothing, they had to return home to the Oberallgäu. His childhood was characterised by abject poverty and austerity. After graduating from high school in Oberstdorf, he studied at the Academy of Art in Munich from 1960 to 1966. Numerous trips took him to faraway countries, but a six-month stay in the USA gave him decisive impetus for his artistic work. Friedrich originally wanted to become a figurative painter, but through his studies of free painting with Prof Geitlinger, a non-objective painter, his development took a different course. Along the way, he completed his state examination for the teaching profession.
From 2000 to 2006, Friedrich was president of the exhibition management at the Haus der Kunst in Munich and president of the Neue Gruppe.
