Shapeshifter

Künstlerhaus Marktoberdorf (House of artists Marktoberdorf) is showing an impressive cross-section of tapestries and ceramics by London-based artist Caroline Achaintre.

Caroline Achaintre works in various techniques such as tapestry, drawing and ceramics, which she combines in a conceptual and process-based manner. In this way, Caroline Achaintre creates hybrid creatures in wool or clay that appear both familiar and strange at the same time. Her changing figures are reminiscent of both expressionist forms and European carnival.

The works, reminiscent of masks or animalistic faces, explore the idea of the uncanny. Anthropomorphic, animalistic and abstract forms thus create a broad field of tension between tradition and modernity, figuration and abstraction, between the familiar and a sense of unease.
