The delicate tableaux made from the silk cocoons of hatched silkworm moths form a distinct group of works. Cocoons are things left behind and found; they embody transformation and change. Everything is subject to the eternal cycle of renewal, change and decay. The artist explores the boundaries of representation, transcends them and redefines the object – the waste product known as the ‘cocoon’. A creative, experimental exploration of possibilities, of pushing boundaries, of engaging with materials – the differing characteristics of silk, linen, cotton and velvet, mattness or sheen, the individual response of colour and the resulting effect – drives Bausenwein’s creative process.
