With *Emil and the Detectives*, Walter Trier created one of the most famous book covers in children’s literature. His bold, bright yellow backgrounds became his trademark and – just like his affectionate yet cheeky characters – played a key role in the global success of Erich Kästner’s children’s books. His colourful, humorous and narrative drawing style continues to delight generations of children and adults to this day.
The travelling exhibition by the International Youth Library at the Mesnerhaus in Seeon Monastery is dedicated to Trier’s illustrations for Erich Kästner’s children’s books and, at the same time, showcases the artist and the man behind the cheeky, cheerful pictures.
