They are still alive today. Europe illustrates the Grimms

The "Children's and Household Tales" by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are the world's most translated and illustrated work in the German language. Many fairy tale editions were and still are in the Biedermeier pictorial tradition of Emil Grimm and Ludwig Richter. These images of the German forest and medieval half-timbered houses have become firmly anchored in the collective memory as fairy-tale backdrops. Some illustrators break with this pictorial tradition and take surprisingly different paths - they bring the fairy tales into the present in an original, bold and witty way. As in the fairy tale itself, many things are possible: Little Red Riding Hood gets lost in the urban jungle (Roberto Innocenti), Hansel and Gretel wander through the forest as comic figures (Sophia Martineck), the Bremen Town Musicians become militant labour leaders (Claudia Palmarucci). In addition to pictures, fairy tale books from 13 European countries and an installation can be marvelled at in this travelling exhibition of the International Youth Library (IYL) in the Mesnerhaus near Kloster Seeon Monastery. The IJB at Blutenburg Castle in Munich is the largest library for international children's and youth literature.
