Access to the art world was still severely restricted for women at the beginning of the 20th century. It was not until 1919 that they began to take their place at art academies. Their works show that they were often more radical and experimental than their male colleagues. However, they often lacked recognition and acceptance as equal members of the art scene. Female artists such as Käthe Kollwitz, Emma Ritter, Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler and Hanna Nagel defied the expectations placed on them as women and artists and clearly helped to shape the art of their time.
