The animal in Expressionist art

In the 19th century, the popularity of animal paintings among the middle classes led to the establishment of the subject of "animal painting" at numerous art academies. The artists of Expressionism rebelled against this. The members of the "Brücke" group of artists manifested the power of animals, visualising their instincts and emotions with the means of formal reduction. The representatives of the "Blaue Reiter", especially their central figure Franz Marc, on the other hand, depicted the animal as an animated being on a par with humans, if not superior to them. The exhibition at the KirchnerHAUS Museum (Kirchner House Museum) presents these differentiated perceptions of the animal and its stylistic realisations by the artists of the "Brücke", the "Blaue Reiter" and other Expressionist artists.
