The exhibition "Turning Point 1525" focuses on a decisive year in the history of the city and its surrounding area. At the same time, it sheds light on the region's part in the German Peasants' War, an important stage on the long road to social emancipation. At the beginning of the year, the long-simmering conflicts between the abbots of Kempten and their subjects came to a dramatic head. The peasants demanded the restoration of their old freedoms. Under the influence of the Reformation, the disputes developed into a struggle of the "common man" for social change. Together with their neighbours, the Allgäu people formed the "Christian Union".
The "Twelve Articles" were the most important programme document of the Peasants' War in Germany. For the small imperial city of Kempten, much was at stake in this crisis: peace within the citizenry, freedom of choice in matters of faith and political self-assertion. In the "Great Purchase", it succeeded in relieving the prince abbot of his last remaining rights. Peasant resistance, on the other hand, collapsed militarily at Leubas in July 1525. Graphics, pictorial documents and graphic reconstructions convey a vivid picture of the era. A special focus is placed on the living conditions of the rural population, illustrated by the example of a farm from the Kempten urban area.
