The history of the railway in a model

The first railway line in Germany was put into operation in 1835. The English steam locomotive Adler travelled from Nuremberg to Fürth for the "Königlich privilegierte Ludwigs-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft". Ten years later, Donauwörth was also connected to the new era with the "Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn".
The first tin toy trains soon appeared on the market. In 1891, the Märklin company presented model trains for children's rooms for the first time at the Leipzig Trade Fair. To this day, the fascination with this toy remains unbroken and it has long since become a coveted collector's item.
The exhibition shows trains from various gauges and manufacturers such as Fleischmann, Märklin, Piko and Trix. Faithful miniature replicas of steam, electric and diesel locomotives shed light on the development of the railway from its beginnings to the present day.
Today it is almost forgotten that the Donauwörth-based company WMD (now Airbus Helicopters) developed and built numerous innovative railway vehicles between the 1950s and 1990s. Some of these, such as the "two-way vehicle" for rail and road or the Munich S-Bahn, can be seen as models in the exhibition.
The model railways, some of which can also be seen in action, come from Detlev Hohmann's private collection, which has been constantly expanded from his childhood to the present day.
