Munich Displaced ONLINE : Digital

Jewish Displaced Persons in Munich 1945–1951

21.01.2025 - 31.12.2034 ,
Jüdisches Museum München (Jewish Museum Munich)

In the immediate post-war period, Munich became a stopover point for tens of thousands of displaced persons―people who had fled, had been deported or driven out of their native countries in the course of World War II. Among these was the group of Jewish displaced persons who called themselves “The surviving remnant”, Sh'erit ha-Pletah in Hebrew.
In two parallel exhibitions held at the Jewish Museum Munich and the Münchner Stadtmuseum in 2023/24, the experiences and stories of DPs from a wide range of backgrounds were placed in a local historical context. For its exhibition “Munich Displaced. The Surviving Remnant,” the Jewish Museum Munich carried out research on some 60 addresses of importance in post-war Jewish history.
Since then, many former displaced persons have responded to the museum’s appeal and supplemented these with their own memories. In its online exhibition “Munich Displaced ONLINE. Jewish Displaced Persons in Munich 1945–1951”, the Jewish Museum Munich is now making its research available digitally. The online exhibition explores Munich’s urban space in the post-war period from the perspective of the Jewish DPs and tells of their experiences.
The online exhibition will be available on the website of the Jewish Museum Munich. The locations can also be found on the interactive map of the participatory online platform Jewish Places.
