In May 1973, photojournalist Diether Endlicher accompanied the Ahrntal farmers’ cattle drive from Kasern in South Tyrol over the Krimmler Tauern down into the neighbouring Achental valley in Pinzgau. The route, some twenty kilometres long, leads not only over steep paths and snow, but also, since 1918, across the Italian-Austrian border. It was not until 1986 that the people of the Ahrntal gave up the drive on foot.
The photographs document the stages of the journey and reveal the considerable feat of strength required of both man and beast that the cattle drive entailed.
