Between democracy, self-determination and violence

Bayerischer Museumspreis 1999.

November 1918 marks the birth of the first German democracy - the Weimar Republic. Many things change. Not everyone agrees.

The first year of the republic, 1919, is particularly characterised by disputes about the new system. People successfully take to the streets in favour of peace, bread and more political rights.

Democracy, emancipation and violence characterise the first years of the Weimar Republic in Bavaria. The exhibition picks up on these focal points and shows how central they still are today, 100 years later.

The exhibition was created by students from the Department of Humanities at the University of Bayreuth and students from the Department of Media Design and Interior Design at the University of Wuppertal, supervised by PD Dr Julia Eichenberg and Alexander Schwarz (UBT) and Tobias Schalk (BUW).
