Field jurors in Franconia
07.06.2025 - 31.08.2025 ,
Heimatmuseum Ebern (Museum of local history Ebern)
Field jurors are a very old, traditional institution in rural areas, especially in Bavaria and parts of Franconia. They have their origins in the Middle Ages and still play an important role in land surveying and boundary supervision today. They ensure that boundary stones and boundary markers between parcels of land, properties or municipalities are preserved and correctly positioned. They support the official surveying system and ensure that no boundary markers disappear or are altered.
They are often subject to a special duty of confidentiality. There are traditional secret signs and rituals, for example when marking boundary points - these signs may only be known to the field jurors.
Field jurors are a fascinating link between tradition and modern administration. They stand for solidarity with their homeland, voluntary work and a piece of living history. Their customs are still passed on today - whether within families or by election in the village.
The exhibition was developed and designed by the Office for Rural Development in Lower Franconia.
