Some people still remember them from childhood: the wrapped oranges and other fruits that were seductively wrapped in delicate, printed paper.

Originally, the ripened oranges were wrapped in plain, thick paper during transport. But soon the so-called tropical fruits were given the fine "tissue paper". This also offered something for the eye and underlined the special value of the fruits, which were still expensive at that time. The paper was used as an incentive to buy and for advertising. This was the beginning of many a collector's passion for the colourful papers.

The beautifully designed citrus papers awakened dreams of the far south, of journeys to Italy or Spain. Destinations that were out of reach for most people in poor post-war Germany. People looked for places like Paterno, Catania, Acireale and many others on maps and dreamed of travelling to them one day.

The Heimat- und Torfmuseum Gröbenzell (Museum of local history and peat Gröbenzell) displays over 120 different examples of these artistic "citrus papers".
