“Steina: Playback” is the first major retrospective in Germany of Steina (b. 1940, Reykjavík, Iceland), a pioneer of video and media art. A classically trained violinist, she turned to the medium of video in the late 1960s, approaching it with a musical sensibility. From early documentary experiments to large-scale multi-channel installations, the exhibition bears witness to Steina’s lifelong pursuit of what she terms “mechanical vision”: a playful, non-anthropocentric perspective that expands perception beyond the limits of the human.
