Water is an existential part of life and has been a central element in festivals, religion and spirituality for thousands of years. But in many places, humanity is heading towards a water crisis or is already in the midst of one. Floods, droughts, falling groundwater levels, rising sea levels, conflicts over water and pollution are just some of the many challenges associated with water as a resource.
Last year's photography competition "WALK OF WATER - Water for Peace and Prosperity" called on photographers around the world to document these challenges and the stories behind them. The competition, organised by Onewater gUG in collaboration with the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme and the City of Burghausen, was presented for the first time at UNESCO headquarters in Paris as part of the World Water Day celebrations on 22 March.
The House of Photography and Onewater gUG are presenting a first-ever compilation of 28 entries from the competition with over 100 photographs and the accompanying in-depth reports. The photo series are based on the themes of the United Nations World Water Development Report and thus cover the entire planet. The result is authentic and documentary stories that go far beyond statistics and data. In their diversity and intensity, they are thought-provoking, call for solutions to be found or already show initial approaches.
