Art needs space!
The SCHOLLE artists’ collective: between lake and moor
16.09.2026 - 14.02.2027 ,
Gemäldegalerie Dachau (Dachau Art Gallery)
Out of the studio, into the light: at the start of the 20th century, the members of the artists’ group ‘Die Scholle’ turned their backs on academic constraints and sought out places where their art could breathe. In Dachau and the surrounding moorland, and in Holzhausen on Lake Ammersee, artists such as Leo Putz, Max Feldbauer and Fritz Erler found new subjects and, with their fresh colours and freer compositions, played a key role in shaping Bavarian Modernism.
Moving beyond the heyday of ‘Die Scholle’, the exhibition also examines the individual paths taken by its members following the group’s dissolution. This paints a multi-layered picture of a generation of artists whose works not only demonstrate a diversity of styles but also reflect the tensions and upheavals of the first half of the 20th century.
