Katsuhiko Matsubara was born in Tokyo in 1986 and studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg from 2016-2021. The artist lives in Berlin.
In Katsuhiko Matsubara's work, everything that has accumulated in the eternal painting grounds of the savages of all countries comes together in a furious way. Control and chance guide his brush. It was Descartes who wanted to see spirit and matter as separate from each other. The Japanese use the words "mono" (the thing, the substance, matter) and "kokoro" (which, rather broadly, stands for heart, soul, spirit, compassion and idea). Ordinary life separates these things. But on a spiritual level, the Japanese see "mono" and "kokoro" as being interrelated. In order for Matsubara's fusions to succeed, the artist throws himself into a dynamic process in which he first separates and then reunites that which corresponds to the flesh and that which is determined by the spirit in an aesthetic act of formulation.
