Moment mal - Denkmal! (Attention - Monument!)

How many monuments are there in Bavaria? And what makes a monument a monument? How does archaeology work and what can be found in Bavaria's soil? What does home mean to us and what does it have to do with our monuments?

The exhibition "Wait a minute - Monument!" shows the preservation of monuments today and introduces people who take care of their living spaces with great commitment. It addresses the hurdles, opportunities and possibilities of heritage conservation and establishes links to current social trends and topics. With free admission, the exhibition provides an overview in nine stations - from the history and development of heritage conservation to before/after examples and current developments in the field of sustainability. For example, visitors can feel ecological insulation materials such as hemp, sheep's wool and cork.

A selection of current solar modules is also on display. In short interview sequences, which can be
QR code, owners explain their life in and with a listed building. A family from Steinhöring renovated an old farmhouse, lives in the innovatively converted stable wing and rents out the former main house as a holiday flat. In Friesenhausen, a dedicated local resident renovated a historic village shop with fully preserved furnishings, which is now open to the public as a private museum. Originally preserved historical goods such as children's shoes, buttons and washing powder packets can be seen in the exhibition.

Volunteers and committed individuals talk about their work, e.g. for the Uhrmacherhäusl in Munich Giesing, to save the castle in Oberschwarzach in Lower Franconia, or for archaeological educational work with children in Regensburg. In addition to around 108,000 architectural monuments, around 50,000 archaeological monuments are currently known in Bavaria. The exhibition shows why gold treasures and jewellery finds are the absolute exception, but common finds such as pottery shards or animal bones reveal at least as much history and stories about life in past eras.

Visitors are given an insight into the various areas of archaeology, such as underwater aerial photography and modern archaeology. Under the heading "What is sacred to us?", examples of successful conversions of empty sacred buildings are shown. Children can practise the art of timber construction on a carpet depicting an aerial photograph with ground monuments marked on it - preferably exactly where no ground monuments are "built over".

Visitors' feedback and opinions are sought at numerous stations. What will monument preservation look like in 50 years' time? Which conversions of churches do you like? Would it bother you if a monument was demolished? The results convey a current mood.
