In 1905, a group of young artists ventured into the modern age. With bright colours, radically simplified forms and a new, subjective expressiveness, they sought an undisguised approach to the world. The Brücke artists challenged the concept of art of their time and laid the foundations for the development of modern art in Germany.
To mark the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Brücke artists' group, the Franz Marc Museum is showing around 50 works - paintings, drawings, sculptures and graphic works - including important loans from the Ravensburg Art Museum and private collections.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Pechstein and Otto Mueller strove for a new unity of art and life. This ideal is just as evident in the vital nudes of the early Dresden years as it is in the scenes of the Berlin period, which are characterised by the dynamism and contradictions of the big city. The fascination with the primal also led to an exploration of non-European art and culture, which served as an aesthetic and spiritual model for the artists.
