The theme of Gil Topaz's work is "time". Since his studies at the art academies in Carrara and Rome, in the early 1990s, the sculptor has repeatedly devoted himself to this theme with his figures and heads. He understands the past as the DNA of modern man and uses symbols in his work that we associate with historical epochs.
As a contemporary artist, he presents these symbols in an alienated way and brings them into a new context. Thus, for the series of works entitled "Appia Figures", he decontextualises the classical torso through the choice of materials, shaping and processing. He shapes his works mostly by chipping away at matter. Therefore, natural stone and wood are his preferred materials. He begins with the first strokes, circling the stone block or wooden trunk. This directness with matter and the slow emergence of the figure is of vital importance to the artist.
