Far removed from tourist fantasies of the glamorous old West, of sleepwalking partygoers in Mitte or cool hipsters in the gentrified urban landscape of Prenzlauer Berg, Maximilian Kirmse's drawings and paintings capture the unaltered everyday life in his neighbourhood. His scenes always seem to be observed from a neutral distance, so that they can neither be seen as milieu studies nor as a chronicle of Berlin.
Maximilian Kirmse's work brings together stylistic and aesthetic elements of "high" and "low" culture in a completely unforced manner, combining them into an inseparable conglomerate that characterises his idiosyncratic and precise signature. Some of his motifs resemble comics, but at the same time some of their imagery appears to have been borrowed from folk art. These dissonances are a natural part of Berlin Mon Amour's unique attitude towards life.
