In 2024, 'Being in-between' provides the conceptual superstructure for nine short, individual artistic presentations that explore the theme in its various aspects. Being in-between can be a thought, a state or even a feeling. We want to understand being in-between as a possibility to see more and to grasp different perspectives at the same time.

Exhibition from 28 March to 25 April 2024
Viron Erol Vert invites us to perceive the third possibility space of the annual programme 'In-Between' as an entity and body in which themes such as migration and adaptation can be negotiated.
In his works, which are characterised by the state and atmosphere of being in-between, the artist interweaves different cultures, materials, languages, forms of expression and also views of life to create a hybrid, complementary identity. This arises from his own intercultural family and environment, as he grew up between Germany, Turkey and Greece. In his artistic practice, the Berlin-based artist scrutinises and examines various aspects and perspectives of the self and the other.
The site-specific installation consists of a small three-sided vintage travelling mirror that invites visitors to locate the 'self' in the darkened space. Emerging themes such as migration and belonging are flanked by the sound collage 'A, Aleph, Alif...'. The artist's voice can be heard reciting the alphabet in seven different languages. These are the languages Vert grew up with.

Viron Erol Vert (*1975 in Varel) lives and works between Berlin and the Mediterranean region. Vert studied fashion design at ESMOD and HTW Berlin, fine art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and textile and surface design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. In his artistic practice, he questions identity and affinity to various aspects and perspectives of the familiar and the foreign. His personal multiculturalism plays a key role in his research, as does his close connection to various club contexts in Berlin. In his artistic work, Vert reveals abstract and theoretical boundaries and attempts to overcome them. Vert's works interweave different cultures, materials, languages, forms of expression, points of view and also views of life to create a hybrid, complementary identity.
Sonya Schönberger (*1975) lives and works in Berlin. Schönberger studied ethnology and philosophy at the Freie Universität Berlin, European ethnology at the Humboldt Universität Berlin and experimental media design at the UdK Berlin. Today she works as an artist between the media of photography, installation, theatre, sound, publication and film. In her practice, she deals with biographical ruptures against the background of political or social upheavals. The source of her works are the people who talk about themselves in biographical interviews. This has led to the creation of several archives, but her work also incorporates existing archives, some of which have already been found.
